A couple of my friends recently shared stories with me of how God manifested Himself to them and in their situations. It was so exciting and inspiring, and I praised God with them! However, it got me thinking about the power of God and why some seem to experience it more than others.
Well, the first thing to consider is that God has anointed some for unique assignments, and has therefore equipped them with the gifts and power needed for their assignments (1 Corinthians 12:4-11). This makes comparing ourselves to others very deceptive and even destructive, but it doesn’t mean that God’s power is limited only to a few. As a matter of fact, when we received Christ, we all received His power.
I thank my God at all times for you because of the grace (the favor and spiritual blessing) of God which was bestowed on you in Christ Jesus, [So] that in Him in every respect you were enriched, in full power and readiness of speech [to speak of your faith] and complete knowledge and illumination [to give you full insight into its meaning]. In this way [our] witnessing concerning Christ (the Messiah) was so confirmed and established and made sure in you That you are not [consciously] falling behind or lacking in any special spiritual endowment or Christian grace [the reception of which is due to the power of divine grace operating in your souls by the Holy Spirit], while you wait and watch [constantly living in hope] for the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ and [His] being made visible to all. -1 Corinthians 1:4-7 AMP
So yes, as a Believer, you have power. Furthermore, God desires to blow your mind with the exceedingly great things He alone can do in your everyday life! But while we have the power, it must be put to work in order for us to see its manifestations. Christ gave it to us, but it’s our responsibility to activate it. Take a look…
Now unto him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us, -Ephesians 3:20 KJV
Ok, so how do we activate the power? Faith! Our faith in action, faith that yearns for and diligently seeks after the intimate knowledge of Him, activates the power of God in us! The scripture refers to this level of faith as abiding.
May Christ through your faith [actually] dwell (settle down, abide, make His permanent home) in your hearts! May you be rooted deep in love and founded securely on love, That you may have the power and be strong to apprehend and grasp with all the saints [God’s devoted people, the experience of that love] what is the breadth and length and height and depth [of it]; -Ephesians 3:17-18 AMP (see also John 15:5-7)
This is what abiding looks like…
–First, check your motives: this is not about tring to get things. Instead, this is about being so grateful and overwhelmed by His love and sacrifice, and therefore longing to please Him with your life. Making it about the getting of things will eventually end in utter failure and frustration.
–Get intimate: for some reason, many get apprehensive about getting intimate with God, but intimacy is required in any relationship worth having. When one dates their future spouse, preparing for marriage, they spend a lot of time talking, going places together, and observing the other’s behavior, all in an effort to get to know them beyond the surface. Getting intimate with God is very similar. Through study of His word, prayer, and worship, we will find ourselves becoming more in tune with Who He is, His voice, and His will for us.
–Be consistent: using the same analogy, those who are married know that being intimate, learning more about your spouse, never ends. It is a continuous process that a husband and wife must commit to in order to experience fulfilling longevity in their marriage. The same is true with intimacy with God; abiding requires consistency. This is more than just a seasonal experience that coorelates with the emergence of a new need in your life. This is a sincere and unquenchable hunger and thirst for Him. Commiting ourselves to a lifestyle of study, prayer and worship will create the atmosphere for God’s power to move freely in our lives.
So make the decision to get off the sidelines and experience the power of God in your daily life. Start activating the Power of God in you today!
